Hardware Grant

HARDWARE GRANTS FOR NON-PROFITS

PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO INCREASED DEMAND, THERE IS CURRENTLY A QUEUE FOR GRANTS OF HARDWARE . YOU ARE WELCOME TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION, BUT PLEASE BE PATIENT. WE APPRECIATE YOUR UNDERSTANDING AT THIS TIME.

Who is eligible

Grants are made to local organisations, specifically not-for-profit organisations, and not to individuals. A non-profit may choose to sponsor an individual who is unable to participate in the Adoption program. We grant hardware to non-profit and social change organisations in British Columbia. We may consider applications from other Canadian communities, but please note: we CANNOT provide for any kind of shipping. You *must* be able to come to Free Geek and pick up the granted hardware.

NOTE: registered political parties are NOT eligible for hardware grants.

What is available

Free Geek does not have any spare money - these grants are for hardware only, primarily systems (which come installed with Free and Open Source Software). All systems come with monitor, mouse, keyboard and power cables.

Equipment we have in stock and probably will be able to give to qualifying organisations without hassle:

  • complete computer systems(P3 to P4 up to 3.0 Ghz)
  • CRT monitors
  • printers
  • keyboards
  • mice
  • cases
  • floppy, or CDROM drives
  • ethernet, or video cards

Extremely unlikely equipment (sometimes we just don't have it) includes:

  • Machines with 2.4 GHz or faster processors
  • SCSI RAID arrays
  • Over fifteen computers per request
  • LCD (flatscreen) monitors
  • laptops
  • external hard drives

We may tend to be a little short on RAM or other parts, especially for the newer systems. Remember -- we are only able to grant what people have given us (equipment they were getting rid of anyways).

Please note: We may only be able to partially fill a grant.

With a GNU/Linux install we can also install standard suite of software packages (OpenOffice, KDE, Firefox, etc.)? If you need or want Windows, Microsoft Office, or other software that needs Windows, you will be installing the software yourself and afterwards we will no longer offer any tech support.
